The political situation is set to become a key factor in Thailand's property market growth next year, according to a senior industry executive.
Jones Lang LaSalle (Thailand) president Supin Meechucheep said the property market in Bangkok this year remained more favourable than many expected, although the country's economy is still 'in tatters' due to the impacts of substantially increased oil prices, political uncertainties, and economic slowdown in the United States.
She said these negative factors had unavoidably affected many kinds of property market, but that the market managed to grow satisfactorily since its fundamentals remain strong.
"Even so, it is hard now to assess the property market situation next year because the political uncertainties remain high. Nobody can guess whether political disturbances will end after the elected government is formed," she said.
JLS research division head Dan Tantisuntorn said the property market demand depended mainly on the country's economic condition.
At present, he conceded that the Thai economy had not only experienced the external factor volatility, but also faced many difficulties, particularly the political uncertainties.
He said many hoped the uncertainties would ease in the post-election period.
Should that happen, he believed, the economy next year would grow more than that of this year, which would contribute to property market growth.
